On January 19, 2023, reports of a possible Zendesk data breach began to surface. Although the company has yet to publicly admit to being the target of a cyberattack, some of its customers have reported receiving emails announcing a data breach. An incident resulted in an unauthorized third party gaining access to certain client account information. After confirming that consumer data was compromised, Zendesk began sending data breach notification emails to all individuals and businesses affected by recent data security incidents.

What we know about the Zendesk breach so far

The information available about Zendesk’s breach comes from a variety of news sources, some of which include direct accounts of Zendesk customers. According to these sources, on October 25, 2022, Zendesk learned that several of its employees were targeted in his SMS phishing campaign. Apparently, this attack allowed an unauthorized third party to obtain the login credentials of several of his Zendesk employees.

Upon learning of the incident, Zendesk enlisted the help of a cybersecurity firm to assist the company in its investigation and review of all compromised unstructured data. Unstructured data from the logging platform was accessed between to October 26, 2022.”

Sensitive data was found to be available to unauthorized third parties, so Zendesk began investigating the affected files to identify the compromised information and affected consumers . By January 12, 2023, Zendesk had at least partially completed a review of the affected files and notified some customers that their account service data had been compromised.

Zendesk then sent a data breach notification to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the most recent data security incident. At the time of publication, Zendesk has not filed an official notice of the data breach, and the total number of victims of the data breach remains unknown.
