Apple reportedly halts in-house Wi-Fi chip project

Apple is fighting to reduce its reliance on third-party suppliers by bringing parts manufacturing in-house. Cupertino is rumored to bring wireless chips, 5G modems, and even display production for the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac in-house, much like it did with its A-series mobile chipsets and M-series SoCs.

Apple reportedly canceled internal Wi-Fi chip project

Latest Semiconductor Research by Analysts Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple has pulled back on its Wi-Fi chip development and will continue to trust Broadcom as a major supplier. Apple spends most of its IC design resources on chipset development. Kuo also said Apple is still prioritizing the development of his 5G modem over Wi-Fi chip projects.

Apple will likely switch to Wi-Fi 6E in the upcoming iPhone 15 models and the rest of its product portfolio. Kuo confirmed that Apple’s Wi-Fi + Bluetooth chip combination is still in development. Mark Gurman also confirmed that Apple is working on his Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo chip.
