You can’t put together a list of the best modern survival horror games. Dead SpaceWhen the original game came out in 2008, it received praise from critics and those who could put up with a playthrough.its sequel dead space 2 (2011) and dead space 3 (2013) was similarly not better.
So when developer Motive announced during EA Play Live in 2021 that a remake was in the works in a spooky teaser trailer, fans of the series (including us) gasped. The wait is over.
We have spent the last few days wandering through the abandoned halls. USG Ishimura See if this remake is worth the time and money for newcomers to the series or longtime fans.
reimagining space travel
A familiar story for those who have played the original. The setting is that at some point in his 26th century, humanity has exhausted all of the Earth’s resources. Humanity has resorted to destructive deep space mining of other planets. In 2008, this might have seemed like his sci-fi setting for a space-themed survival horror game. Fifteen years later, it doesn’t seem all that fictional or exaggerated.
You fill the stocky space boots of Isaac Clarke, a humble systems engineer (he can speak now). You are part of a team sent to investigate and repair Ishimurathe flagship of Concordance Extraction Corporation and the first Planet Cracker-class vessel.
When the team arrives, what should have been normal repairs quickly goes south. The ship you arrive on is destroyed, leaving you and your team stranded.of Ishimura It seems abandoned and most of the systems are broken or damaged beyond repair. Also, there are strange red stains on everything. It doesn’t take you or the team long to realize that Sumia is a member of the ship’s crew and that something is seriously wrong.
Within the first 10 minutes, you’re separated from your team to see something turn one of them into an abomination that David Cronenberg would be proud of. Eventually we learn that these alien-human hybrids are called Necromorphs. They obviously didn’t like their planet being mined.

Okay, that’s not the real reason they’re pissed off. There really wasn’t time to sit down and ask. But without spoiling too much, it involves a religious cult and one of the British Museum’s favorite pastimes: the ‘relocation’ of foreign artifacts. All that’s left for you and your team is Ishimura Find survivors and solve puzzles along the way, piecing together the mystery of what happened.
The main campaign spans approximately 12 to 15 hours with 12 chapters. It takes about 20 hours to complete the entire game. The story follows a similar beat to the original, but the remake introduces new interactions and dialogue for the main characters, adding more depth. There are more text and audio logs that extend the lore of the game and add additional explanations.
These playtime numbers are only rough estimates. If this is your first playthrough, expect it to take a little while as we will be pausing periodically to give your pounding heart a break.
Everything is a weapon if you’re violent enough

Far-future system engineers aren’t hot. Also, they have no combat training. He spends the first ten minutes or so of the game unprotected. You end up armed, but there is only one conventional firearm in the game. The rest of his seven weapon roster are mining tools, which the protagonist Isaac modifies using his engineering his smarts.
As you make your way through eerie corridors and abandoned offices, you’ll find ammo, parts for cash, and power nodes. Use the latter to upgrade your Resource Consolidation Gear spacesuit, or RiG for short. You also gain Kinesis and Stasis abilities that you use to protect yourself and solve puzzles.
Use your enhanced mining equipment (and big Stompy Space Boots if you run out of ammo) to survive the necromorphs. However, just like in the original game, aiming for the head won’t help here. You need to tear your enemy’s limbs apart before it’s really safe. The development team has used his EA’s Frostbite engine and extended this with what they call the “necromorph peeling system.”
Similar to how buildings are partially demolished, battlefield The franchise, dismantling enemies, utilizes a new exfoliation system to expose layers of damaged skin, muscle, bone, and organs. Smart players will use this to their advantage, and the newly upgraded Plasma will show just how strong his cutter is. It also adds even more gore to the game.
Who knew a bloody wall could look so beautiful
In addition to tweaking gameplay and new systems, the developers have made significant audio and visual improvements Dead Space Match what you’d expect from a 2023 title. Like most remastered games, we didn’t simply upscale existing textures and assets. We’ve reworked all textures, animations, effects, and some of the enemy behavior in the Frostbite engine to great effect.

Motive’s 2023 remake
If you played the original game with anticipation like we did, the comparison screenshots are a good indicator of what you can expect visually. However, if you have a PC that can run at maximum settings (PC requirements here). However, we are unprepared for how improved lighting, shadows, updated textures and assets, and volumetric fog add to the tension and atmosphere. Even with the settings back a bit and with upscaling techniques like Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR, it can look good and feel scary.
you are always in fear
It’s as if the Motive development team had a big chalkboard in their office with the word “immersion” in small letters and the word “tension” in big letters underneath.all aspects of Dead Space It seems to work to maintain immersion or create tension, but it usually does both at the same time.
Want to swap empty weapons in your loadout, check the map, or play an audio log? Context menus appear as holograms in front of you in real-time without pausing the action . It keeps the camera fixed in place while you frantically navigate through menus. Even if you wait until you seemingly calm down, you always feel unsafe.
There are no overlaid HUD elements showing health points, ammo count, oxygen time, or minimap. These systems are cleverly integrated into the gameplay and are always in view thanks to the over-the-shoulder third-person view, adding to the immersion.
Health, Oxygen, and Stasis are integrated into RiG, ammo counts are displayed when aiming weapons, and maps have their own menu pages. RiG projects a holographic route to the currently selected target via a hotkey so you don’t have to show it every time you get lost.
Even the placement of game savepoints that must be manually triggered makes us wonder what comes next.”Why do they think I should be saving now?” I always wondered.
Outside of scripted action pieces, the game uses a dynamic encounter generation system as you wander the halls and find clues. The system combines elements such as enemy spawns, audio, and lighting changes to custom his situation for each playthrough. And then there’s the NewGame+ system for future playthroughs.
Suppose you hear screams in the distance. Lights flicker and something pops out of a nearby vent and tears you apart. There’s no guarantee it will happen again after loading a save and returning to the same vent. In retrospect, I saw that another vent was used, and this time it drove me crazy.
Dead Space (2023) Verdict
2008 remake Dead Space I always wore big toe shoes. You might think it’s relatively easy to improve an already great game, but we’d argue that it’s easy to fail. Without losing out, it managed to improve not only the terrifying visuals developed by Visceral Games back in 2008, but also the engaging gameplay and immersive story.
Whether you’re a fan of the franchise, returning after a long hiatus, or a complete newbie, Dead Space At R1,000 on Steam, R1,100 on Xbox Series X|S, and R1,070 on PS5, you’ll still want to play this game. I’m cautiously optimistic about the sequel remake. But let’s not count the necromorphs before popping out of the vents.
