Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup has traditionally been the first to include all iterations of Gorilla Glass Victus from the original version, and the same is true for the upcoming Galaxy S23 series. confirmed that it will be used for the first time in the next-generation flagship phone series.
Corning’s most rugged screen protection debuted last November, but we’ve yet to see it in action. The latest version of Gorilla Glass will actually make its world debut on February 1, when the Galaxy S23 series officially breaks the cover.
According to a press release, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is said to improve its ability to protect the phone’s screen from drops while maintaining the same level of scratch resistance as its predecessor. (opens in new tab)Corning claimed that the first-generation Gorilla Glass Victus can withstand drops from up to 2 meters onto rough surfaces.
In laboratory tests, Corning’s latest iteration survived a one-meter drop onto concrete or asphalt-like surfaces. This means Samsung’s next flagship phone can withstand waist-high drops on rough surfaces.
The Galaxy S23 phone isn’t the only phone to feature the latest Gorilla Glass version. Many of his best Android phones set to be released this year will also have this feature. It remains to be seen which other smartphone brands will use this screen protection, but Corning’s promise of improved drop performance is enough to get us excited.
Besides the front glass panel, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 can also be used to protect the rear glass of the S23 model, but neither Samsung nor Corning mentioned this. Samsung won’t have to wait long to find out, as he plans to officially unveil the Galaxy S23 series on February 1st at the first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year.
