As the “Duo” in its name suggests, the Viofo A129 Pro Duo is a two-camera dash cam system. The front has his 4K sensor for recording video in Ultra HD resolution, while the back is limited to 1080p Full HD. Both record at 30 frames per second.
This kit also includes a GPS module. It’s fairly chunky, but it mounts neatly to the front-facing camera, adding accurate speed and location data to your video recordings. Includes some adhesive clips to route cables along, and a 12V power adapter with two USB ports (for charging your phone and powering your dash cam). at the same time).
Viofo A129 Pro Duo release date and price
The Viofo A129 Pro Duo was first launched in October 2019 and is available now, with a January 2023 list price of £187.67 / $224.99 / AU$ 333.67.
In addition to all this, the review kit offered by Viofo includes an optional polarized lens cover (£11.25 / $13.49 / AU$20.01), front-facing camera video quality and a Bluetooth remote button (£14.99 / $17.99 / This provides a convenient way to record footage without taking your eyes off the road.
The Viofo is an affordable price considering it is a dual camera system and records the front view in 4K. But on a technical level it works well, and while we’ll talk more about performance later, the look and feel reminds us that it’s more affordable. It’s a clunky, crappy dash cam that lacks the quality Garmin, Thinkware, and Nextbase offer. The plastic is scratchy, the cables are frustratingly thick, and the overall aesthetic feels like his decade-old tech product.

Moving on from so-so hardware, the software is also unpolished, with a slightly confusing button design where the Rec and Mic buttons also serve to scroll up and down the menu system. The beep can thankfully be turned off and via a Wi-Fi connection with the Viofo app[設定]You can also access the menu. I like the way the app works without requiring you to create a user account, and despite the many bad reviews on the Apple App Store, it’s a clunky practice common in most dash cam apps. We found that it works without any problems.
The setup experience could be more sophisticated, but dashcams are mostly set-and-forget devices that quietly get the job done without much fuss. I suspect some buyers will be confused by the fact that it has more settings than most dash cams, requiring you to select your preferred bitrate and video frequency. , but we find the additional configurability appealing to some buyers.

Both cameras attach to the vehicle’s windshield with adhesive pads. The front camera can be removed by sliding it sideways from this pad (attached to the GPS module). It’s a quick and easy way to remove the Viofo from your car, but it’s just as easy to pull out a microSD card (sold separately) and connect it to your phone app via Wi-Fi when you want to transfer your footage.
We were blown away by the video quality produced by the Viofo A129 Pro Duo and its Sony Exmor R sensor. The front camera was especially impressive. 4K resolution is doing a lot of the heavy lifting here, allowing for more detailed and sharper images than Full HD resolution would allow. Impressive in what it can do. The saturation is very high, but don’t worry as this is post-incident self-defense footage and not meant to be shared on YouTube or Instagram.

Video quality is better than 1080p dash cams, but there are still questions about whether 4K recording is really worth it, at least from a practical standpoint. The recordings are around 300MB each, so a microSD card can fill up quickly and transferring and viewing footage can be a cumbersome process.
The rear camera is limited to Full HD, so naturally it doesn’t produce impressive footage, but it’s still perfectly adequate. It can be higher in the front where you want to look 160 or 180 degrees to match the buttocks.

Conveniently, footage automatically saved when a collision is detected by the G-sensor is placed in a separate folder. That way you can easily find the right file when viewing it again on your computer or tablet. Viofo’s naming convention is convenient because the date and time are in seconds, making the file name almost cryptic.
A parking mode is available, but requires a wiring kit, sold separately. Like any dash cam, this gives the A129 a permanent power source, allowing it to sense collisions while parked and record potentially important evidence of what happened. As always, we recommend hiring a professional to install your hardwiring kit. Also, Viofo’s rather thick USB cable makes it more difficult to install discreetly than other dash cams on the market.
