As Twitter stopped offering free access to its Twitter API starting February 9 and launched a paid version, the Elon Musk-owned microblogging website is seeking more avenues to monetize the platform. I said yes.
series of Tweet, according to a Twitter developer account, the company will end support for both v1.1 and v2 of the Twitter API. The move follows Twitter’s abrupt changes in recent weeks to the terms of the API used by many popular Twitter clients such as Tweetbot and Twitterrific. Most third-party Twitter apps have shut down their mobile apps.
“Twitter data is one of the most powerful data sets in the world. We are working to enable rapid and comprehensive access so that development can continue,” the developer account on Twitter said Thursday.
Many developers use Twitter’s API to interact with social networks. The company has had a strange relationship with its developers since its inception. However, the relationship generally worked out because third-party companies often shipped new products and features for Twitter, and Twitter never tried to monetize its API.
Under Musk’s leadership, Twitter is scrambling to control how users around the world access the platform, expanding its efforts to monetize the service.
“Hundreds of millions of people have sent over a trillion tweets over the years, and billions of tweets are sent every week,” a Twitter developer account said.
