There’s Discord Amongst NVIDIA Users As VRAM Frequencies Drop

Gamers have long memories of this sort of thing

Discord’s latest update has unwanted effects for users with NVIDIA GPUs. If he’s running Discord while gaming, whether or not he’s streaming the game, he’ll see that the VRAM isn’t running at full speed. The amount of loss depends on the card you are using. RTX 3xxx cards see a 200MHz drop and older GTX 1xxx cards see a ~500MHz drop.

Benchmarks will certainly notice that, but the performance impact of new cards is minimal to the gaming experience. Still, the fact that this is happening isn’t a problem for NVIDIA card owners who would have known nothing but the curiosity of some tech-obsessed gamers. It is also concerning that there is still no explanation as to how Discord is impacting GPUs, only speculation.

NVIDIA has created a workaround that can block Discord’s new trick using the GeForce 3D Profile Manager. A proper fix will be coming soon.
