traitor, A startup looking to build a “better chicken” has raised at least $20 million in new funding, TechCrunch has confirmed.
The Seattle-based venture-backed company calls its production technology “the most advanced plant-based meat-making system on the planet.”
Defiant The company is looking to raise a total of $30.7 million, according to a public regulatory filing filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The report includes the names of his previously announced backers YB Choi of Cercano Management, angel investor Owen Gunden and Mike Miller of Liquid 2 Ventures. Filings show that at least 55 undisclosed investors have participated in the latest round, but as usual SEC disclosures will require more investment.
When asked to comment on the fundraiser, Defiant Chief of Staff Tina Meredith declined to provide details about the company’s funding plans. Still, the company’s website shows an effort to build a “next-generation meat machine” called the MockTwo. Rebellyous calls its technology an alternative to factory farming, which it frankly and rightfully describes as “fucking shit”.
The filing comes at a time when some of the most famous names in lab-grown meat are struggling to realize their overarching vision of destroying big meat (a somewhat outdated report suggests that this is the United States more popular than ever).
Impossible Foods may soon lay off 20% of its workforce, according to a Jan. 30 Bloomberg report. Similarly, Beyond Meat announced it would lay off 19% of its staff in October amid reportedly sluggish sales. As always, all eyes are on cost.
