Overhead scanning systems combined with artificial intelligence automatically assess the health of cows twice daily on dozens of ‘smart’ dairy farms across the UK.
A 3D camera captures the animals’ backs as they exit the milking barn, and sensors read individual ID tags. Associated computers then process the data using machine learning to provide key daily information on each cow’s weight, body condition and mobility, said the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK.
