What you need to know
- Images may have revealed the design of the Sony Xperia 1 V’s camera.
- This image shows a Zeiss branded triple camera sensor, but without a ToF sensor.
- Sony may launch the flagship at MWC 2023 at the end of February.
Samsung may have just launched the Galaxy S23 series, but we expect February to be filled with new phone launches, and Sony might be among them. It may have revealed some of the upcoming Xperia 1 V flagship, showing some visual changes to the camera design.
This image was posted on Weibo (via the Android Authority) by a user who claimed this image was of an Xperia IV. This image shows that Sony may continue to use the same proven triple-camera array. A design that sticks to several flagship generations. However, there are some differences that suggest an improved camera system.

The image shows that the Zeiss T* branding is still present. However, it lacks the 3D ToF (Time of Flight) sensor and RGB-IR color sensor found in the last few Xperia 1 models. The former captures depth data, while the latter helps the phone make more accurate white balance adjustments.
It’s unclear why these aren’t there, but it suggests that Sony’s camera system has improved enough that it’s no longer needed. I can’t see it on my phone.
The leaker points to changes made to the primary and ultrawide sensors, but doesn’t elaborate on what that means. After a slap in the face, can we finally see higher resolutions on Sony’s flagships? Most recent Android smartphones feature Sony’s 50MP IMX sensor, with very good results. . Sony also has a 1-inch type sensor found in smartphones such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro. It’s great to see the company making use of these sensors in their smartphones.
Aside from imaging, Sony has also included a new rear mic taken from the Xperia Pro-I, which is used to capture high-quality audio for vlogging.
The image doesn’t reveal much, and the leaker isn’t very confident in the information provided, so for now we’ll have to take it with a grain of salt.
The Xperia 1 IV will launch in May 2022 and will be released later in the year. However, it is possible that Sony will unveil his Xperia 1 V earlier this year at his MWC 2023 later this month. If so, we can probably expect a hefty price tag and a long wait before the phone actually hits the market.
