Influential architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) was commissioned to design a new television and film studio complex in Brooklyn, New York City. Dubbed Samson Stages Red Hook Studio, this US$400 million project of his is envisioned as a ‘vertical village’, taking the form of his six blocks stacked on top of each other.
As its name suggests, Samson Stages Red Hook Studio will be commissioned by local production company Samson Stages and located in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn.
It measures 330,000 square feet (approximately 30,000 square meters) and spans eight soundstages, creating a new state-of-the-art facility for television and film production. Its internal layout is arranged vertically rather than most similar facilities, which are generally sprawling squat structures.
In addition to the main soundstage, there will be a parking lot, a large lobby entrance and a cafe. Its massive form creates a spacious terrace area, and the renderer also features cycling paths, stepped seating areas, and water activities such as kayaking. Additionally, the project will create a new waterfront public park and plant significant greenery, including plants and trees.

Sam Geiger, co-founder and CEO of Samson Stages, said: “The new additions to Samson Stages will create jobs, bring new waterfront parks to the neighborhood and continue to make New York a center of television and film production.”
The project isn’t actually BIG’s first foray into the film business, but follows design work for Wildflower Studios backed by Robert De Niro. Wildflower Studios is currently underway in Astoria, Queens and is also located vertically. In fact, this project was explained by his BIG. As “the world’s first vertical photography studio”.
Samson Stages Red Hook Studio is developed by Vanta Developers. No word yet on when it will be completed.
