HBO’s Last of Us It wields popular music to baffle us, tie episodes together, and make us cry. I’m here.
In Episode 4, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) travel to Kansas City in Bill’s (Nick Offerman) car. Before Ellie happily finds a porn magazine in her backseat, she discovers a cassette edited by Hank Williams. original single collectionwhich collates many of the singles of American country singer-songwriters of the 40’s and 50’s.

When Joel inserts the tape into the player, it plays the last song Bill heard on the track, Williams’ 1955 song “Alone and Forsaken.” (Imagination of Bill taking care of the city in his car, picking up fresh supplies and blowing this doom-laden song brings new tears to my eyes.)
In the game, Ellie and Joel are listening to the same cassette.(opens in new window) (and doing the exact same exchange) on a road trip to Pittsburgh (the show changed locations to Kansas City(opens in new window)), but let’s start with another song by Williams. Perfect for “I’ll Never Get Out of This World Alive.” When Ellie goes to sleep, she wakes up to Joel listening to Williams’ “Alone and Forsaken,” just like in the show.
“Alone and Forsaken” is a lonely heartbreak song by Williams, Last of Us As a melancholy anthem of melancholia and melancholy. Very appropriate for 2023’s post-apocalyptic America, Williams’s 1955 song seems tailor-made for it. Here’s an excerpt of the lyrics:

The title of the fourth episode of the HBO series, “Please Hold My Hand,” is also taken from this lyric. As another reference, the name of this chapter of the game is “Alone and Forsaken”.
