This emoji tweet is a reference to a joke Ellie (Ramsey) told Joel (Pedro Pascal) at the end of Episode 4.
“Joel, did you know that diarrhea is hereditary?”
“what?”
“Yeah, it runs in your jeans.”
The joke is from a book that Ellie carries around in her backpack. No pun intended: volume too By Will Livingston, she happily reads aloud to Joel, with little to no response from her parents.
However, the joke about diarrhea is the first time Ellie has properly made Joel laugh, and seems to mark a key bonding moment in the pair’s relationship.
Of course, it’s also an undeniably good joke.
