DOOM 1.1 Had Multimonitor Support?!?

No, I didn’t explain the original DOOM well enough

It was recently discovered that the original DOOM had multiple monitor support. The way it did explains why it took me so long to figure it out. This support is only in DOOM 1.1 Present and not present in subsequent updates, making this feature even more obscure until published by Tech Tangents and shared on Hackaday. The source code is open, so if you want to try this, you’ll need 3 copies and his 3 computers to run it on. Not to mention monitors.

Playing multi-monitor DOOM requires connecting three instances of the game to a networked computer using the old IPX driver code DOOM used for multiplayer. Instead of bots and others, it spawns two drones that are locked to the first instance, giving him a 90 degree perspective from that instance. With one drone set to -left and one to -right, he can actually enjoy looking at DOOM.

This takes a bit of effort to explain why this support was removed in later versions of DOOM, but if you want to experience one of the first games with multi-monitors, it’s a bit of an effort. should be expected.
