WhatsApp’s Status feature gets a ton of new functionality, including voice and reactions

Today, WhatsApp announced many new additions to its Status feature. The update enabling all these new features has already been rolled out to users worldwide and should be available to everyone using WhatsApp “in the next few weeks.”

So what’s new? First, you can now record and share voice messages as status messages. These can be up to 30 seconds long. Then you can update your privacy settings for each status. This allows you to choose who can see (or hear) your status every time you update it. As you can imagine, the last selected audience is saved and used as the default for the next status.

WhatsApp's status feature gets lots of new features like voice, reactions and more

Status reactions allow you to respond to status updates. This seems to have been the most requested feature on WhatsApp following the launch of reactions in chat last year. Swipe up and tap one of the 8 emojis to quickly reply to your status. Of course, you can also reply with a text, voice message, or sticker.

Every time a contact shares a status update, a new status profile ring appears around the contact’s profile picture and appears in the chat list, group participants list, and contact information section.

Finally, link previews are now enabled in statuses, just like in chat. So when you post a link in your status, you will automatically see a preview and your status will look great. It also lets your contacts know what the link is about before they even tap it.
