Twitter broke after deploying 4,000-character Tweets

Twitter broke for hours after introducing a new 4,000 character limit earlier in the day.

On Wednesday afternoon, users realized they could not publish their tweets. Instead, I got the message “You have exceeded your maximum number of tweets per day”, or simply the error her message. Users have discovered that they can still publish Tweets by scheduling them via the web app.

I’ve noticed that some users can’t see their messages and others only see verified accounts in their feeds. Starting around 4pm ET, Mashable’s sibling site Down Detector(opens in new tab) We have received thousands of outage reports.

Twitter from today announced(opens in new tab) New for Twitter Blue subscribers, you can tweet up to 4,000 characters. This may be related to outages.leaked email(opens in new tab) From Twitter CEO Elon Musk to Twitter staff, “Please pause development of new features to maximize system stability and robustness, especially with the Super Bowl approaching.” I’m here.

Facebook, Instagram, and… McDonald’s apps are all reporting outages per Down Detector, so it could be server related.

The problem seems to have been resolved. We’ll update this story when Twitter officially explains what happened…but we’re not holding our breath.
