It’s no secret that Elon Musk was planning to increase the character limit on his tweets. On Wednesday, the company revealed it has implemented a second increase, allowing users to post tweets of up to 4,000 characters.
While this change sounds visually overwhelming, the company ensures that long tweets don’t overwhelm your timeline with fairly long tweets. Because of this, timeline characters are limited to 280 characters and a ‘more’ prompt appears that you can click to read the full Tweet. “

This new feature is available now to Twitter Blue subscribers in the US, but anyone who chooses can view and read these longer tweets. This includes replies, quotes and retweets.
This is the second increase in the Tweet character limit since 2017, when it was raised from 140 to the current standard of 280. However, this extended character limit has some limitations for some users. When Tweeting from the web, you cannot draft or schedule Tweets longer than 280 characters.
The new limits are just the latest example of significant changes to the platform since Elon Musk took over. The most controversial change was made to the new Twitter Blue subscription. This now costs more and puts users under a Blue tick. Dedicating the new character limit to Twitter Blue could be a way to encourage more users to subscribe.
Twitter took advantage of this new limit by posting tweets with “more words” typed over and over again. In response, other accounts responded with similar tweets, including the official accounts of Jurassic Park, Minions, Pizza Hut, and others.

Twitter is in some sort of outage after launching a new feature. As of this writing, many users have been incorrectly notified that they have exceeded their daily tweet limit. It is unknown if the two events are related.
