Back in 2017, German audio specialist Sennheiser launched the powerful HD 650 headphones, the successor to their open-back midrange audiophile champion. The company has now responded to user feedback and injected some low-end goodness into his updated HD 660S2 cans.
“Our new Sennheiser HD 660S2 offers what listeners have been asking for most from their headphone predecessors,” said Jermo Koehnke, Audiophile Product Manager at Sennheiser. “With unmatched precision and power, and new sensitivity across all frequencies, listeners can hear details never heard before, especially at the lower end of the spectrum.”
According to the company, listeners will enjoy the familiar and characteristic baseline level of detail across the frequency range, but can expect more presence in the bass range down to 8 Hz.
Airflow around the 38mm transducer has been optimized thanks to a new vented magnet setup that pinches the distortion of the buds while delivering more dynamic playback. The voice coil has also been partially lightened to improve impulse response.

The resonance frequency has been lowered from 110 Hz to 70 Hz in the HD 660S headphones, making “heavy kick drums move with ease,” doubling the sound pressure at the lowest frequencies, and adding “exceptional precision and precision throughout the sub-bass. Balance is maintained. Mid-low, and beyond.”
In addition to being lower than before, the frequency response has also been slightly extended to 41.5 kHz, while the sensitivity and total harmonic distortion remain unchanged at 104 dB and less than 0.04% respectively. The headphones also feature a cushioned headband and comfortable ear pads that let you enjoy the expansive soundstage for hours on end.
Sennheiser has designed the new headphones to be versatile enough to connect to vintage and modern audio systems via the included cables and adapters. Ambient noise enters.
The HD 660S2 headphones are currently priced at US$599.95 per order, with sales expected to begin on February 21st.
