‘The Last of Us’ episode 5: What are Bloaters?

Crawling out of the twisting sinkhole of doom, surrounded by battalions of infected, armed with enough force to wipe a man’s head off, Last of UsThe villainous suppuration tank officially joined the chat in Episode 5.

One of the hardest foes in the Naughty Dog games to defeat, the Brooders finally made their way to the HBO series on Friday after making headlines from their trailer cameo in Episode 5. A slow-moving but impenetrable barrel that’s as terrifying as the Clicker “malfunction”, the bloater that appears in the battle sequence initiated by Kathleen’s (Melanie Lynskey) Kansas City Militia. For Kathleen’s right-hand man, Perry (Jeffrey Pearce), it’s been quite a headache.

In games, Bloaters are pretty slow and sluggish when not charging. It enjoys casually flinging clouds of toxic spores. Like Clicker, it uses echolocation to find you because your face is hijacked by Cordyceps. In the game, if he’s grabbed by a Bloater, at best he’ll be knocked to the ground, and at worst, he’ll be mercilessly ripped apart.

In this series, creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin pay the utmost respect to this festering foe, turning the creature into something like a pissed-off Balrog ready to turn Gandalf from gray to white. Deploying some solid WWE moves, using echolocation to identify the most imminent perpetrators, and when Perry fires his gun to no avail, Bloater begins the game tactic of separating poor Perry’s head from his body.

Early in Henry’s (Lamar Johnson) episode, we learn that FEDRA drove the infected underground in Kansas City 15 years ago, thinking the problem was solved. As you can see, Kathleen and Perry neglected to tell the Resistance. Episode 5 showed us exactly what it was, but it wasn’t pretty.

However, there is one thing we know from the game. Despite its violent introduction, the brooder is vulnerable to fire. Something to keep in mind, Joel and Ellie.
