Samsung released the latest 990 Pro SSD firmware update today. The company does not provide official release notes, but Tom’s Hardware report This update is likely intended to fix an issue that caused drives to wear out quickly and report as failing.
Samsung’s previous generation 980 Pro SSD also received a firmware update for another reliability issue in January. His boutique PC maker Puget Systems recently drew attention to this problem when it announced that it would be using another company’s SSD in its high-end workstation PCs.
A drawback of the 990 Pro firmware update (version number 1B2QJXD7) is that it does not reset the wear rate counter for SSDs affected by the bug. If you have a drive reporting 72% wear, a firmware fix will stop that number from continuing to climb faster than it should, but it won’t bounce back. This is either because the bug accelerated the drive’s deterioration, or because the drive simply cannot distinguish between the actual wear of the drive from normal use and the artificial “wear” due to a firmware bug.
If your 990 Pro SSD is reporting abnormal wear, or if the drive has already stopped working, another firmware update in the future may resolve the issue, but please contact Samsung Customer Support. Contacting us is the safest way. Attempt to repair or replace the drive under warranty.
The easiest way for most Windows users to install Samsung firmware updates is to use the Samsung Magician SSD software. For those who use Linux or other operating systems, don’t want to install Magician software, or have many drives to update, the company has created an ISO image that can be used to create a bootable USB installation drive.
