For Amazon, Echo Auto is the gateway for connecting Alexa to vehicles, bringing its voice assistant into one of the spaces where people spend most of their time outside their homes. Although the two are only one generation apart, they have no physical resemblance and distinct features and functions.

At first glance, the most obvious difference is in their respective designs. The first-generation model presented a flatter pad-style build, more in line with Amazon’s Echo product line when it launched in 2018. Similar to the current Echo product line.
By reducing the size of the 2nd generation model, you also have more options for installation locations. For example, both models have attachments that hang over vents, but only the Gen 2’s lighter and smaller frame is significantly more stable when placed there compared to its predecessor. Or sell it as part of a bundle, so the original has one, but it doesn’t come in the box with the new one.
Alternatively, you can attach either unit to the other side by applying the included adhesive to the dashboard. You’ll need to find a spot that isn’t made of soft plastic, leather, or fabric to stick it properly, but the adhesive that comes with the Gen 2 is definitely stickier. is not much different except that the Gen 2 cable does not come loose. Each comes with his 12V socket adapter for power and his 3.5 mm cable that plugs into the vehicle’s Aux-In port for audio playback, run through your car stereo.
The Echo Auto Gen 1 has 8 mic arrays and the Gen 2 has 5 mic arrays. This points to a major flaw in the newer models, but it really isn’t, as the two capture audio well, even with typical road noise and closed windows. Amazon claims its own improved algorithms compensate for the Gen 2’s lack of microphones, but it’s hard to know exactly how they work.
They both have the same Mute and Activate Alexa buttons, so nothing changes between them. Hands-free access is performed via an enabled Bluetooth connection between your device and your Android phone. The Alexa app must be running and configured for the integration to work at all times.

The main purpose of having either device is to access Alexa hands-free in the car. Both Echo Auto models do that, and you can do a few things while driving. Including playing music on demand.
Regardless of the model you have in your car, you’ll need the Alexa app on your Android phone to not only set up your device, but make it easier when possible. The process is the same either way. Improvements made by Amazon may only change performance and functionality.
Echo Auto Gen 2 not only responds faster, but it also improves call quality when using Echo speakers at home to communicate with others. The mic does a better job of interpreting voices and accents than previous models. This will save him a lot of time and effort if things get done right more often.
There are two other differences between them. While connected, the Alexa app has an option for roadside assistance, which can be helpful if you have car trouble in an unfamiliar area. Echo Auto is perfect for vehicles that don’t have the latest infotainment systems. If you’re already running Android Auto, you probably don’t need either of these unless you’ve invested heavily in the Alexa and Echo ecosystem. Android Auto brings the Google Assistant hands-free and integrates with messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, but not the Alexa app.
Both Echo Auto and Android Auto can be used together. TRUE I need access to Alexa in my car. If that’s you, the Echo Auto Gen 2 is a better way to go for its efficiency and ancillary features. Considering that, it’s worth the money.
