Samsung was one of the first brands to release a smartphone with a built-in projector over a decade ago, and a new patent filing suggests the brand is looking to extend that functionality to wearables. A built-in Samsung Galaxy watch has emerged with a patent application showing a concept device that can transmit information from outside the housing to the back of a user’s hand.

As described in the patent, the projector bit incorporates multiple lenses and an arc of LED emitters. You can mirror the main screen and project an image or video onto the back of your hand. The patent explains that the miniature projector can “display information different from that displayed on the display module.”

Use cases described include broadcasting and projection of multimedia content. Samsung also explains that the LEDs inside the projector can adjust brightness and focal length on the fly to ensure an optimal display. As with all patents, there’s no certainty that Samsung will actively pursue this effort, but we can only hope to see more information and a working prototype of this patent application.
