A Samsung or Google smart ring could be interesting, but not many are convinced

What you need to know

  • Samsung is rumored to be working on a smart ring.
  • We polled our readers to see if they would be interested in a smart ring made by Google, Samsung or Apple.
  • Many people were interested in Google and Samsung rings, but many were still not interested in the smart ring idea.

Smart rings are still a fairly new device type and quite niche. However, things could change if major smartphone makers step in and develop their own products. By calling out big names like Google, Samsung, and Apple, the smart ring could get off to a serious start. But our latest poll suggests that consumers are still not convinced smart rings are worth their time.

Recently, I asked readers if they would consider buying a smart ring if Google, Samsung, or Apple made one. Unsurprisingly, there was little interest in Apple’s smart ring, while Google and Samsung received 30% and 26% of the vote respectively. Still, his 28% of voters still say they’re not interested in buying a smart ring, and many say it falls short of offering the same features as the best smartwatches.

Here are some of the reactions we received from our readers:

  • Alfredo Lehar: “Of the three options, Apple confirms that it only works with Apple products. Google doesn’t even bother selling it outside of a few countries, so you end up buying from Samsung.”
  • angus: “It doesn’t matter who the maker of the ring is, it’s whether or not you pay for the subscription. That’s what keeps me hesitant.”
  • VG Burnsey: “Everything a ring can do is part of what a smartwatch can do, and is already part of what a smartwatch can do, and the watch is a more reasonable sell because of its versatility.”
  • Reduan Flores: “I don’t know if I like the idea of having to charge the ring as well”
  • Billy Allen: “No. I have to look at my phone to see what information the ring gives me because it doesn’t have a screen. I think the watch can do more and do better .”
  • John Wentworth: “No, smartwatches are still mostly fashion accessories. How much functionality can they really offer?”
  • Susan Hughes: “It depends on what software you run. Samsung and Apple watches can do so many things. I keep adding, when I go out I take my phone out of my bag and use it every day.”
