The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that it is investigating malicious cyber activity on its own network.

CNN reported Friday that hackers compromised the FBI’s computer systems at the FBI’s New York field office, citing people briefed. A brief report added that the incident involved a computer system used to investigate child sexual exploitation images.

In a statement given to TechCrunch, FBI spokesperson Manali Basu confirmed that the FBI has contained an “isolated incident” and is continuing to investigate.

“The FBI is aware of the incident and is working to obtain additional information,” a spokesperson said. , the FBI will not be providing further comment at this time.”

There are many unknowns about the incident. It is not immediately clear when the intrusion occurred or how the FBI was compromised. The nature of the incident, which appears to have yet to be claimed by a major cybercriminal organization, also remains unknown at the time of publication.
