Samsung has released a new smartphone feature designed to protect user devices from threats masquerading as image attachments.
This new feature called “Message Guard” is currently compatible with the Samsung Messages app and Messages by Google.
“In line with Samsung’s philosophy of open collaboration, a software update will be rolled out at a later date to allow Samsung Message Guard to protect users even with third-party messaging apps,” the company wrote. blog post Published on Friday.
From a technical perspective, Message Guard acts as an advanced sandboxing layer that separates image files from the rest of your device.
“This prevents malicious code from accessing your phone’s files or interacting with the operating system,” the company explains. “Samsung Message Guard checks files piecemeal and processes them in a controlled environment to avoid infecting the rest of your device.”
If the file is determined to be harmless, normal access by the user is allowed. otherwise it is discarded.
“Samsung Message Guard automatically neutralizes potential threats lurking in image files before they can harm you. does not need to be activated,” the company wrote.
“Where before you could be at risk without doing anything, now you are protected from zero-click attacks without doing anything.”
The Samsung Message Guard feature is currently rolling out on Galaxy S23 series devices. The company has confirmed that it will be bringing the new features to other smartphones and tablets that support One UI 5.1 or later later this year.
