South Korea announced on Monday that it will launch its own 6G network by using world-class technology, advanced software-based next-generation mobile networks, and strengthening its network supply chain. The news was released by the South Korean Ministry of Science and Information Communication.
The South Korean government will incentivize local companies to produce materials, components and equipment for the development of 6G networks. We also plan to strengthen our supply chain to support that network. A feasibility study to study the core 6G technology is already underway. The project is worth his 625.3 billion won (about $482.1 million).
With this initiative, South Korea aims to beat the world in 6G technology. South Korea is her fourth largest economy in Asia, and in 2022 she accounted for her 25.9% of 5G patents (while China accounted for her 26.8%). The South Korean government hopes to surpass her competitor’s 30% in 6G patents.
According to Zhang Yongtao, deputy general manager of Ericsson China Technology Department, 6G will integrate virtual and reality. He suggests that 6G will take holographic communications from his science fiction to reality.
