Blind amplification of opinions and posts on social media is one of the main reasons why misinformation spreads so quickly. Over the years, celebrities have posted or retweeted false information on her Twitter. Twitter now notifies users when a tweet they like, retweet, or reply to receives contextual information from the author of a community note. “This helps provide people with additional context they might otherwise miss,” the company said in a tweet.
Likes, retweets, and replies to tweets give some relevance to the recommendation algorithm. Twitter has been pushing algorithmic feeds for some time. People may delete likes and retweets if the context of the community note contributor can reveal the original view.
The program will first be introduced in 2021 under the name “Birdwatch” for US-based users. After Elon Musk bought his Twitter, he renamed the program “Community Notes.” idea It was “the most boring Facebook name ever.”
In December, Twitter began showing community notes to all users around the world. In January, the company began accepting notes from contributors based outside the US in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. So the community notes program doesn’t have a global context yet.
