Walmart sells e-commerce outdoor retailer Moosejaw after acquiring it in 2017

Walmart is selling e-commerce outdoor retailer Moose Jaw to Dick’s Sporting Goods after acquiring it six years ago. Financial terms of the transaction, which is expected to close in March, were not disclosed. Walmart acquired Moosejaw for his $51 million in February 2017 to bolster its e-commerce offerings. At the time, the deal was seen as a new entry point into apparel for Walmart.

The Michigan-based outdoor retailer was founded in 1992 and operates an e-commerce platform that sells outdoor apparel and gear. Moosejaw also operates physical stores in Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan and Missouri.

By acquiring Moosejaw, Dick’s Sports Goods looks to expand its e-commerce channel while accessing a loyal customer base.

Todd Spaletto, president of Public Lands and senior vice president of Dick’s, said: , in a press release. “We believe we have the potential to grow Moosejaw’s business and provide millions of loyal customers with engaging experiences and a wide selection of products.”

TechCrunch reached out to Walmart for comment.

When Walmart acquired Moosejaw in 2017, the company was doing a sort of M&A, looking to bolster its portfolio of digital brands under Mark Roar. The sale shows that Walmart may be struggling to integrate its direct-to-consumer brands into its larger business.

Note that Moosejaw is not the first e-commerce brand purchased and sold by Walmart. In 2017, the company acquired his ModCloth of womenswear, which was sold to investment firm Go Global in 2019. Around the same time, Walmart acquired lingerie retailer Bare Necessities, which it sold to global manufacturer and marketer Delta Galil in 2020. The company also acquired online shoe retailer ShoeBuy in 2017 and sold it to private investment firm CriticalPoint Capital in 2020.
