YouTube appears to be testing new options for users who stream YouTube from their mobile app. As a Reddit user discovered u/KZedUK (via today’s tech), a new option for stream quality appeared called “1080p Premium”, which is described as having “enhanced bitrate”. This new stream option is now available to YouTube Premium users and exists alongside the heavily compressed “regular” 1080p option.
today’s tech We speculate that the new “high bitrate” 1080p option addresses users’ desire to watch high-quality video by switching to 1440p or 2160p (4K) streaming options when available. This new option helps offset YouTube’s operating costs and meets user demand for high-quality video on mobile.
