ZTE will unveil the nubia Z50 Ultra with a fourth-generation under-display camera, said Ni Fei, president of mobile devices at the Chinese company. In a lengthy post on Weibo, he explained that his nubia brand has been in the smartphone business for over ten years. The new Ultra will be equipped with a new solution, “the culmination of nubia technology” that has been in development for six years.
The nubia brand is partly owned by ZTE, whose operations in China are controlled by the network equipment and smartphone maker. A device with a selfie camera under the screen has been around for over two years since Axon 20, and the nubia brand got his UD treatment with the launch of the gaming device Red Magic 7 Pro.
The nubia Z50 Ultra is the first all-around flagship with this feature, so it’s no surprise that Ni is betting on smartphones. The device itself has been leaked in a schematic posted by Digital Chat Station, which shows the sharp edges of a flat-sided phone. The camera island is rectangular, with the main shooter on the left.
The image also shows some sort of notification/alert slider with a grainy texture. The bottom has space for the speaker grill, SIM slot, and USB-C port, while the top has an IR blaster. The phone has already been spotted in spy photos and is expected to be unveiled within the next month.
