James Webb telescope just found galaxies that shouldn’t exist in deep space

Scientists expected the James Webb Space Telescope to reveal unknowns in the deepest regions of the universe.

But they certainly didn’t expect this.

While scanning the region of space near the Big Dipper, a group of astronomers identified six faint objects that appeared more than 13 billion years ago. They believe the object is an ancient galaxy. Scientists expect these early clusters of stars and swirl matter to be relatively small. After all, there hasn’t been much time for such galaxies to form or grow. But researchers report that these galaxies are huge.

“It’s a banana,” said Erika Nelson, an astrophysicist at CU Boulder who worked on the new study, in a statement.(opens in new tab).

Web observations show that the “red and bright” object may host billions of stars, so it’s a banana (and more planets), similar to our Milky Way galaxy. The very distant galaxy is the fuzzy red object shown below. They are red because the universe is expanding, and light passing through it is stretched, eventually shifting to longer, redder wavelengths. Importantly, research on these galaxies is just beginning. Astronomers using the Webb telescope have also discovered even earlier galaxies, including one that formed just 350 million years after the Big Bang. But these galaxies are much smaller. They make more sense than the recently discovered behemoths.
