Lenovo’s MWC booth had some interesting stuff on Motorola’s rollable smartphone concept (which could be called the Moto Rizr). Yes, a nod to the iconic Motorola Rizr Z3 slider phone from 2006. This new concept device features a 5-inch display with a 15:9 aspect ratio, which stretches vertically to a 6.5-inch diagonal with a 22:9 aspect ratio.

This means you can go from a mini-sized phone to a plus-one with the touch of a button, offering both a phone that’s easy to use with one hand and a large screen to consume media when you need it. Just double tap the power button. Motorola says the controls may be different if there is a mass-market device based on this.

The screen is a pOLED display manufactured by BOE, and like all rollable and foldable displays, it presents its own set of durability issues. A panel wraps around the back of the device, leaving a small area of the display available for notifications or as a camera viewfinder for previewing shots.

Another interesting thing is that the earbuds and selfie camera are actually hidden behind a panel, so the display rolls down every time you make or receive a call or take a selfie.
A rollable mechanism automatically enlarges the view of apps like YouTube for a more immersive experience. The Mail app allows you to fill in a larger canvas. Icons and wallpaper on the home screen are also rearranged when the display is enlarged or reduced.
Motorola’s rollable concept phone weighs 210 grams and comes with a 3,000 mAh battery. So much for the specs. It will be interesting to see how far Motorola takes this concept and how it plans to bring the rotary phone to market.

Durability is a big question mark for a device that rolls up more than it folds. This Motorola’s rotatable screen is always exposed, and the slightest fall can destroy the entire experience. We also need to take into account the movement mechanism that rotates the display up and down. Again, a rotatable phone makes better use of space with a more compact form factor, which is an attractive proposition.
