Qualcomm has partnered with HONOR, Nothing, OPPO, Xiaomi and others to bring Snapdragon Satellite connectivity to Android smartphones.
After the 5G hype subsides, satellite communications have emerged as the latest trend for tech brands. Samsung and MediaTek announced similar technology last week, after Apple launched satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 series last year. Qualcomm has also been on board for some time, and the company has revealed more information about his Snapdragon Satellite technology.
At MWC 2023 today, Qualcomm revealed that it is working with several Android device makers to integrate Snapdragon Satellite technology into their next-generation smartphones. HONOR, Motorola, Nothing, OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, etc.
Qualcomm previously revealed that Snapdragon Satellite functionality is available on select Android smartphones with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processors. This technology allows users to send and receive messages from users in remote locations (out of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage). Primary purposes stated at this time include emergency use, SMS text messaging, and other messaging applications.
According to Qualcomm, Satellite will be available in all upcoming 5G modems (RF systems) and 8- to 4-layer variants of the Snapdragon Mobile Platform. It also expands into other areas such as Internet of Things (IoT), automotive, and computing. Qualcomm expects the Snapdragon Satellite to launch in his second half of 2023.
