Chatbots such as ChatGPT may one day become an important part of our daily lives. Facebook promotes it by building them into its chat apps, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
In a post published on Monday(opens in new tab)Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is creating a “new top-tier product group (…) focused on generative AI.”
The team will start by building “creative and expressive tools”, but in the long term will focus on developing “AI personas that can help people in many ways.”

These personas will be embedded not only in Facebook chat apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger, but also in photo apps such as Instagram and “video and multimodal experiences.”
Zuckerberg didn’t divulge too many details about how these user experiences would actually work, but he did say that before the company could actually build something compelling, “the basics that have to be done There is a lot of work,” he admits.
In other words, expect simpler AI-based features and tools first. A full-fledged AI bot that can create the perfect Instagram filter or answer your Messenger questions will come later.
It’s worth noting that while Messenger’s chatbots were already around in 2016, nothing came close to the level of human-like conversation offered by ChatGPT. Meta has also recently invested heavily in the Metaverse, a loosely defined set of virtual reality and related technologies that include AI to some extent.
Facebook’s initiative comes after OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT skyrocketed to become one of the most popular apps in the world. His OpenAI investor, Microsoft, has moved quickly to incorporate ChatGPT’s technology into its search engine, Bing.
