Google has already detailed what’s planned for the first feature drop in 2023, so it looks pretty busy. Now Google is back with even more exciting news. Fall detection is finally coming to the Pixel Watch.
Google announced the feature at its Pixel 7 and Pixel Watch launch events, saying it’s coming “this winter.” It was only a matter of time before fall detection was added, but some users got it a little early after his December 2022 update.
The way fall detection works on the Pixel Watch isn’t all that different from other top Android smartwatches with this feature. According to Google, “When a hard fall is detected and you don’t move for about 30 seconds, your Pixel Watch will vibrate, sound an alarm, and show a notification on the screen to see if you need help.”
You can choose from several different prompts from the notifications that appear. These include “I fell and need help”. Or you can tap the “I’m fine” button to turn off the alarm and get rid of the notification. However, if you don’t interact with the notification, Google says the alarm will “last for about a minute.” If you don’t get a response after that amount of time, your Pixel Watch will automatically try to notify emergency services.
All of this is done through a combination of the Pixel Watch’s built-in motion sensors and on-device machine learning. In order to properly contact emergency services in the event of a fall, the person using her Wi-Fi-only Pixel Watch must be “within range of a smartphone and connected via Bluetooth.” Those using the LTE variant simply need an “active LTE connection on the watch”, removing the dependency on smartphones.

Google’s approach to the Pixel Watch is very good, even though some features were missing at launch. Regular software updates continue to improve what was already considered one of the best smartwatches.
