There are no two ways. Prices are getting higher these days. Inflation is rearing its head again, and we’re feeling the tension in all sorts of unexpected places. And while the high cost of living in this sun-kissed country usually translates into a better quality of life, there are some who simply pay more than they should.
In many ways, the concept of an ‘Australian tax’ is very real. The idea that the prices of Australian goods and services tend to be higher than the equivalent cost in comparable overseas countries. That reality gets tougher when you shop online, especially when you come across US-based online retailers. It will also affect your service and your bill.
A classic example of this is the Internet in Australia. What is Gigacom?
GigaComm is (in their own words) an “independent provider of managed network services.” Basically, they’re a locally owned new ISP (Internet Service Provider) doing something a little different. Unlike traditional telcos and service providers, GigaComm bypasses his reliance on nbn and uses fairly proprietary technology his network to deliver lightning-fast service. This means they can offer speeds of up to 1000/100Mbps on their own network, offering low-latency connections with ping rates of less than 5 ms within Australia, which is huge for online gaming. It is not throttled by throttling or congestion in congested networks (as many other ISPs are).
In addition to this, they have their own technology to offer their services, so they control their own pricing and are not charged by nbn like other providers ( nbn will pass those costs on to you).

That’s about $20 cheaper than the most popular nbn plans and a whopping four times faster (currently standard rates are about $75 per month for 50/20 Mbps).
Feeling pretty good? There is one pitfall here. It’s not available everywhere yet, but its coverage area is constantly expanding. If you are in Sydney or Melbourne, chances are you live or work in one of these areas.

Overall, GigaComm offers an impressive product at a reasonable price. However, one of the drawcards that might hinder change: limited geographic availability. As independently operated ISPs rely on their own technology, nationwide rollout will take some time.
