Teardrop hinges are a commonly used design in which an axle rotates within the hinge and has several advantages. Reduce the gap between the two halves of your smartphone to minimize screen creases.

At this year’s CES 2023, Samsung demonstrated a new hinge design that is 14mm thin, as opposed to the current implementation, which is 15.8mm thick.

The news doesn’t come as a big surprise, as several past reports have come out stating that Samsung is working on an improved droplet hinge design.

Anyway, Samsung’s internal testing could take a while, as it takes about five days to test a single prototype. The benchmark is 200,000 folds, after which the hinge should retain at least 85% of its initial tightness and strength.
