Women scientists remain in the minority, accounting for one-third of all researchers. To celebrate and support the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the UK-based Royal Photographic Society hosted the first Women Science Photographer of the Year competition.

“Representation helps invite the next generation to follow their curiosity and participate in the fields of science and art.” basin triptych (pictured above). This shows a map of her three largest watersheds in the United States, illuminated by bioluminescent seaweeds called dinoflagellates. Although their glow looks dazzling, the toxins some of them emit can pose a threat to marine life.

The Young Woman Science Photographer Award for Under 18 went to Kelly Zhang. beauty of soap bubbles (pictured above) – A quirky shot of the iridescent surface of these delicate spheres.Finalists also included Lyanna Nixon scientific breakthrough (main image) provides a snapshot of a recent MOSAiC expedition investigating how the Arctic will be affected by climate change. Here, researchers are looking for spots to measure the surface reflectance of sea ice.
