Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing to launch a new batch of Macs “in late spring and summer.”
The most important of the three is the 15-inch MacBook Air, but the new Mac Pro update completes the Mac’s transition from Intel’s CPUs and AMD’s GPUs to Apple Silicon, and the new 13-inch MacBook Air is also on the card. Apple is also said to be planning a new 24-inch iMac that could be the first Mac to use the next-generation M3 chip.
The 15-inch MacBook Air will be a new product category for Apple. It’s a laptop with a bigger screen that’s cheaper than the MacBook Pro. From the old PowerPC iBooks to the first Intel MacBooks to his current MacBook Air, Apple’s consumer laptops are all in the 11-13 inch range. The 15-inch to 17-inch PowerBook and MacBook Pro models always needed more CPU and GPU power, which drove prices up. Gurman’s report contains few details about the new 13-inch MacBook Air other than the fact that it exists. The M2 model was just released in July, and the gap between the M1 and M2 Air was nearly a year and a half, but it could be the new model with the M3 chip. It could even be an M2-flavored update to the legacy, notchless $999 MacBook Air.
But Gurman seems more confident that the new iMac will feature the M3, given that “Apple is developing its next iMac on the same timeline as the M3 chip.” This new iMac looks just like the current M1 model, from the 24-inch screen to the available color options, but “some of its internal components” will be “relocated and redesigned.”
The new iMac is in an “advanced stage of development” and will likely launch in the second half of 2023. Gurman says Apple is still working on a larger iMac, but the report only mentions his 24-inch model.
There are no new details about the Mac Pro other than a planned spring/summer release. Apple has already passed his two-year transition deadline he set for Apple Silicon Macs in 2020, but plans for the new Mac Pro have reportedly shifted as development progressed. It was originally going to feature its own ultra-high-end Apple Silicon chip, but those plans were scrapped and Gurman said the M1 Ultra follow-up could be a version based on the M2 Ultra.
