As the group approaches Joel and Ellie’s lair, she does her best to wake him up, pressing a knife to his chest and telling him she intends to separate them. “If someone gets here, you kill them,” says Ellie. “I got it?”

It’s safe to say that Joel took Ellie’s advice seriously and, after injuring the man, tied them both up and interrogated them as to Ellie’s whereabouts.

Joel uses the same map trick in Episode 6.

If Joel feels a little déjà vu when he asks a man to point to a map, it’s because he’s done it before. Joel does the exact same trick when he comes across an elderly couple living in a wooden shack.

In episode 6, “Interrogation” is a bit of a relief, with the elderly couple mostly laughing off Joel’s attempts to intimidate, and everything ends amicably well enough. It almost gives the impression that Joel’s ruthless past is behind him.

The return of map tricks in Episode 8 made it clear that this was not the case. After all, Joel’s ruthless streak never left him.

Ellie being kidnapped and possibly harmed is clearly enough to do just that. send a message. price.
