Nvidia has released new driver updates for their GeForce graphics cards. This introduces a new video super-resolution upscaling technology that makes low resolution videos look better on high resolution screens. However, it seems that this driver (version 531.18) also had a bug that caused him to have high CPU usage on some PCs after running the game and then quitting.
Nvidia has released a driver hotfix (version 531.26). The issue appears to have been caused by an undisclosed bug in the “Nvidia container”, a process that exists primarily to contain other processes shipped with Nvidia’s drivers. It also fixes a “random bugcheck” issue that can affect some older laptops with GeForce 1000 series or MX250 and MX350 GPUs.
Not all PCs running newer Nvidia drivers are affected by this bug—some reporters I’ve seen it work on their system, others did notEven relatively low CPU utilization in the 10-15% range can have a noticeable impact on performance by stealing CPU cycles from other tasks and preventing the CPU from being idle. This creates more heat, uses more power, and can also affect your laptop’s battery life.
Another recent software bug in Nvidia’s drivers caused the game to run slowly when the Discord app was running in the background. An issue with application profiles was causing GPU memory to not reach peak clock speeds and frame rates to drop accordingly. The fix can be pushed silently in the background to PCs running Nvidia’s software, but to install the fix for the CPU usage bug, download Nvidia’s standard his 850MB driver package. must be installed.
