There are nearly 1,500 rivers in the UK, but only two are officially recognized as swimming destinations. Even these rivers are too polluted to be safe to use. Campaigners want other rivers to receive this “bathed state” designation, but the requirement to clean up pollution that could harm health and local ecosystems has increased.
