Lenovo today announced three new supercomputers under its ThinkStation line. The company has announced its new ThinkStation P5, P7, and PX desktop computers. These have been co-developed with Aston Martin to ensure they meet industry standards. The top of the three desktops is the ThinkStation PX. It features dual CPUs with up to 120 cores, four NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada GPUs, up to 2TB of DDR5 memory, and 60TB of hot-swappable storage.
The new ThinkStation comes after Lenovo unveiled several upgraded ThinkPad laptops, Chromebooks and all-in-one monitors at MWC 2023.
Lenovo ThinkStation P5
The “lowest” computer is a ThinkStation P5, but don’t let the numbers fool you. The desktop has an Intel Xeon W processor with 24 cores at 4.8 GHz. It has two NVIDIA RTX A6000 GPUs, each with 48 GB of VRAM. Eight he also has 512 GB of DDR5 memory with DIMM slots and up to 48 TB of storage. The front of the PC also has access to hot-swap disks for tool-less serviceability.
As for ports, there is a single audio combo jack. As an optional setting, users have the option to get two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports and two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports. On the back are two USB 2.0 ports, three USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2 port, one RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet port, line-in and line-out ports There is one Built-in Intel AX211 Wi-Fi 6E 2×2 and Bluetooth 5.2.
The device comes with Windows 11 Pro or Windows 10 Pro for Workstation exclusive software, and Ubuntu Linux. As for the power supply, there are 750W and 1000W PSUs, offering 92% efficiency.
Lenovo ThinkStation P7
The Lenovo ThinkStation P7 is a step up from the P5 and follows a similar chassis design. It features the same tool-less customizable front access panel for hot-swappable drives and is rack-optimized for use in the data center.
The ThinkStation P7 is powered by an Intel Xeon W-3400 processor with up to 56 cores running at 4.8GHz. Additionally, there are three of his NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada graphics cards with a total of 48 GB of his VRAM. It has up to 1 TB of DDR5 memory and up to 52 TB of storage. It has the same front, optional and rear ports as the P5, with support for Wi-Fi 6E 2×2 and Bluetooth 5.2 just as well.
It comes preloaded with Windows 10/11 Pro for Workstations and Ubuntu Linux and comes with 1000W and 1400W power supplies to keep these cards and chips running.
Lenovo ThinkStation PX
The Lenovo ThinkStation PX is the top of the three new supercomputers and packs a ton of power. Lenovo says it has a 53% improvement in average performance compared to the previous generation, and we’re looking at the specs. It seems incredible. The chassis has been co-designed with Aston Martin and features the iconic chassis with advanced thermal architecture. There are two redundant power supplies for “mission-critical applications” and three front-access hot-swappable card slots on the front of the device. Naturally, the desktops are also rack-optimized and ready for use in the data center.
Lenovo ThinkStation PX is powered by dual 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 120 cores (60 cores per CPU) running at 4.1GHz. It has four NVIDIA RTX 6000 graphics cards with a total of 48 GB of VRAM and 2 TB of DDR5 4800 MHz memory. In terms of storage, it has capacities up to 60 TB with plenty of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD and 3.5-inch SATA HDD slots.
Your desktop comes with a powerful 1850 W power supply and an optional redundant power supply to keep you running. There are two optional USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports and two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 front ports. On the back of the desktop are two USB 2.0, four USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2×2, RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet, another RJ-45 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, and line-in and line out. Naturally, it has an Intel AX210 AC Wi-Fi 6E 2×2 connection and Bluetooth 5.2.
The fully loaded desktop weighs just 38 kg (83.8 lbs) and comes with the same Windows 10/11 Pro for Workstations and Ubuntu Linux software as the other two models.
As you can imagine, these ThinkStations are not intended for general consumers, but for professionally managed IT workplace environments and enterprise-grade users and businesses. Lenovo has not announced pricing for these devices, but says they will be available from May 2023.
