Update, 3:45 PM ET: Relativity Space reached within 70 seconds of launching the Terran 1 rocket on Wednesday and stopped counting down because the upper stage methane temperature reading was “out of range.” The company retried his second countdown during his three-hour launch window, but it was canceled due to time constraints.

The three-hour launch window begins at 1:00 PM ET (18:00 UTC), and weather conditions at the company’s Cape Canaveral, Florida launch site appear ideal. The biggest threat to today’s launches is almost certainly some problem during the vehicle or ground system countdown that commonly occurs with new rockets.
If the rocket takes off, Terran 1 nominally reaches its 365 km x 373 km orbit in exactly eight minutes. But it’s not clear if the launch of the Terran 1 rocket, which is largely additively manufactured by large 3D printers, will go as planned. Aware that this was a pure test flight, Relativity did not carry any customer payloads on this flight. And the mission is affectionately named “Good Luck, Have Fun,” acknowledging that there’s a bit of a beer side to this test flight.
You should set your expectations accordingly. No private company has ever launched the first independently developed liquid-fueled rocket to orbit on its first attempt. Relativity is pushing many boundaries with their methane-fueled boosters. Perhaps the biggest test here is whether his 3D-printed structure of Terran 1 can withstand the dynamic pressures rising through the lower atmosphere.
The nominal first stage performance is therefore a key outcome as it validates the company’s approach to manufacturing. Ground tests can only go so far. In Rocket, the ultimate test flies.
If Terran 1 beats the odds and reaches orbit, it will be the first methane-fueled rocket in history. Last December, Chinese semi-private company Landspace failed in an attempt to launch his methane-fueled Zhuque-2 into orbit. A second stage accident doomed the vehicle. Other methane rockets, such as the United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Booster and SpaceX’s Starship, will appear as well, so it’s likely that the Terran 1 rocket can claim the title of “first methane rocket to reach orbit.” This is your only chance.
Relativity Space is one of the most interesting new space launch companies. It was founded seven years ago by Tim Ellis and Jordan Noone with the goal of 3D printing rockets on Earth and one day on Mars. Since then, Ellis has proven himself to be a superstar fundraiser, bringing in more than $1 billion and building one massive series of factories in Southern California.
The company has so far used four generations of Stargate metal 3D printers and adopted a well-known name in the launch industry. Today, Relativity is one of the most ambitious, well-capitalized and capable launch companies in the world. Within a few years, we aim to fly a large, fully reusable rocket named Terran R.
