Heartiest congratulations to Android maker Realme for being the first to clone Dynamic Island for iPhone 14. It took roughly half a year, but everyone at the Chinese OEM (subsidiary of BBK, the same company as OnePlus/Oppo) worked together to make this general-purpose product.
The Realme C55 launched in Indonesia for around $195 and features a new “mini capsule” UI. When displaying certain kinds of notifications, the phone has two black bars popping out of the front-facing camera lens, giving you more information than you’d normally get with a single status bar icon. Just like the new Dynamic Island notification space on the iPhone 14. The iPhone’s display dead space is due to the large number of FaceID sensors inside, but there’s no new hardware here (it’ll take a while to copy). A regular front-facing camera becomes a giant pill.
Apple’s end-to-end control over the OS and app ecosystem means that all kinds of apps will use the Dynamic Island notification motif, but Realme is just an Android maker that makes Android skins, so in practice It looks like the only notification that appears on the “Mini Capsule” is battery status. Connect your phone to see charging stats. When the battery is low, the outline of the pill turns red to warn you that your phone is about to die. Realme also has plans for an update to display a step counter and data usage.
As for the rest of the phone, there isn’t much to write home about. This is still a budget phone. The specs are 6.7 inches, 90Hz liquid crystal, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, 5000mAh battery. Additional tiers of 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage are also available. The SoC is a MediaTek Helio G88 (a 12 nm chip with 2 Cortex-A75 CPUs, 6 Cortex-A55 CPUs and an ARM Mali-G52 GPU). There’s a headphone jack and a MicroSD slot, so it’s not all bad for the budget.
The body of the device, much like the iPhone 4 or 14, contributes to the “fake iPhone” look with flat metal bands that wrap around the sides. The back is a little different, as two large camera bumps wrap around his two budget cameras. The sensor, and the yellow version of the phone, have an iridescent back that looks pretty.
This may be the first iPhone 14 clone, but it won’t be the last. Next in line for copiers is Huawei, who is rumored to have a fake Dynamic Island lined up for the Huawei Nova 11. Assuming Huawei finds the chip for it, the phone will launch in the first half of this year. I plan to
