Twitter isn’t working well these days.
Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is working on a standalone text-based social network app. It will become a Twitter rival as well as a decentralized competitor, Mastodon.

“We are looking at a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We see opportunities for another space where creators and celebrities can share timely updates on their interests. We are,” a Meta spokesperson told Moneycontrol.
This news is not at all surprising. In December, there was a report that Facebook was working on a “text-centric app using Instagram technology,” and a new report said the app would become “Instagram branded,” allowing users to share their Instagram credentials. It claims to be able to log in using And while it seems like a difficult marriage — Instagram is all about image sharing, after all — a recently launched Instagram feature called Notes lets users share text posts with others. This could be the basis for future text-based apps.
Codenamed P92, the app may still be in early development, but we know it will be standalone. That means it’s not a feature added to Instagram, and the decentralized part will likely support his ActivityPub, the decentralized social networking protocol Mastodon is based on. If so, it would be a major shift in strategy for Meta, which manages nearly every aspect of the other social networks it owns.
It’s easy to see why Meta moved to compete with Twitter. Twitter has been plagued by technical glitches and dwindling advertiser funding since Elon Musk took office, which Musk is trying to offset by laying off most of the company’s workforce.
