Imagine trying to dive into a familiar multiplayer game. Power up your console, put on your VR headset, launch an app on your phone, play whatever flavor you want. But the experience is quickly ruined when the human on the other side utters a tirade of curses and racial slurs that would piss off even the most well-conditioned adults around.
Everyone is there because it is a pervasive problem in many online games. When humans are involved and some sort of chat is available, anonymity is often tempting to say things that someone would never say in person.
But Demeo is different. Jump into the game and you’ll be greeted by friendly, cordial people, even if they’re random people. They’re really happy to help new players and strategize deeply with returning folks without the childish jokes and curse that other games suffer from.
This is one of the many reasons it ranks above the best Quest games. (opens in new tab) and the best PSVR 2 games (opens in new tab) But what did the developers do to bring about this kind of friendly environment? I sat down with Tommy Palm, CEO of Resolution Games, to discuss this very topic. The conversation was enlightening and hopeful for the future of multiplayer games.
another crowd

Of all the information we got from this interview, the most definitive answer to the first question was simply that Demeo is a different kind of game than most other online games. There’s a different pace, different mechanics, and a different mindset, starting the moment the player puts on the headset.
As Palm said in my interview:
The game’s many free updates and campaign additions have created an even more nurturing environment for cooperation and loyalty.
Fundamentally, Demeo is not an online shooter on twitch. Because his style of long, cooperative gameplay brings people together, whereas other types of games often put players at odds with each other. It’s an effect I’ve noticed every time I play and it’s something I noticed in my first hands-on playtest (opens in new tab) Almost two years ago now.
Amazingly, the feeling hasn’t diminished at all. Instead, the game’s many free updates and campaign additions have only further created an environment in which cooperation and good faith thrive.

“Demeo’s gameplay tends to create epic moments where one player magically slips through the moments when everyone gives up hope, but the game’s ups and downs are almost, if not dictating. It gives you the real feeling of being there,” Palm said.
Demeo’s latest campaign adds some truly challenging enemies that constantly warp around level-generating portals that bring in countless enemies. This kind of mechanic actually forces players to work together rather than rushing in as the lone hero who saved everyone.
Demeo is mostly made up of adults and has little free time…it’s almost guaranteed that play sessions are taken seriously and people have fun instead of wasting time. increase.
Palm said there are many moments where someone’s heroic action saves everyone and drives the feeling that “it magically slips through.”
But this doesn’t necessarily happen if the “right” audience isn’t playing Demeo. Palm noted that many people are picking up VR headsets like the Meta Quest 2. (opens in new tab)These people say, “When I was younger and had the time, I had a really positive experience with role-playing games. Demeo allows me to quickly relive that experience with random people who want to play at the same time.” .”
In other words, DeMeo is mostly made up of adults who want to relive the glory days of childhood role-playing games, but have little free time. That’s exactly why people work well together.
Yes, that means Demeo culture is similar to geek culture – I can speak from a lot of personal experience here – i.e. what you look like and what you sound like It essentially means that play sessions are taken seriously and people are there to have a good time instead of wasting time. I guarantee that you will be in
Free to Play Isn’t Always Your Enemy

Anyone who has ever participated in a free-to-play multiplayer game knows one thing right away about the game’s player base. There is nothing wrong with playing games with children — I mostly only play games that my son can watch and play with me — children are always taught proper manners Instead, it creates a less-than-ideal environment.
But that obviously also applies to adults who have never grown up or learned to treat others with respect.
Free-to-play games are often filled with gamers who don’t care about the outcome or the experience of others.
Free-to-play often poses another challenge for gamers as well as developers. Palm says: For example, let’s look at ratings. Anyone who downloads can rate it right away and I’ve seen my fair share of weird reviews like his 1 star review on Bait!that says “I don’t like fishing” . Before downloading a fishing game, one would think that it made a difference. “
This kind of situation can be hilarious at times, but more often it’s just frustrating and offensive.
But free-to-play games don’t necessarily have to be.
Palm notes that in another game they created, Blaston (a free-to-play player-versus-player game), “the player base is very polite, even bumping fists and openly chatting with other players.” There is,’ he told me.
Yes, including after defeating.
I also like “Tinyverse” by Resolution Games. The company humorously calls it a social-only space. The Heroes Hangout is a place where a few players can come together to paint minifigures, play arcade games, and listen to music.
This is the basic version of the Metaverse concept, which states, “Create an environment where you can do a variety of very meaningful things to do with other people around you so that you don’t feel like you’re spending Friday nights alone.” This social nature is part of the magic of VR.”
how moderation helps

Voice chat and anonymity often ruin the fun. This is often a recipe for disaster when combined with free-to-play games. The experience is generally terrible, not to mention a pain to set up most of the time, and I can’t remember the last time I used voice chat in a non-VR game.
Palm agreed, saying, “I play Counter-Strike, but I have voice chat completely turned off.”
The ease and realism of communication in VR games immediately makes you think about the limits of communication.
But in VR things are different. Since the headset is already in your head, no additional setup or configuration is required. Just jump into the game, watch the players, talk and interact with them. One of the magic things about VR is that it makes you feel like you’re actually playing with another human being instead of yelling at them through a microphone.
But VR also presents its own challenges. There is essentially zero friction to initiate communication, yet the ease and realism of communication leaves people instantly wondering what the limits of communication are.
Often this leads to physical harassment in the digital world.
As my astute colleague and editor-in-chief Shruti Shekar pointed out, women often bear the brunt of this type of harassment more than any other demographic online. Female players and streamers are often treated as sexual objects rather than people, mostly due to the anonymity provided by the remote digital space.
I think it’s my duty as a game developer to think about these things in advance.
Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm
When I asked Palm about what Resolution Games did to prevent this kind of behavior, his response was very impressive.
“I feel it’s my duty as a game developer to think before these things happen.”
That’s not someone who avoids known problems or pretends they don’t exist. “We’re always looking at ways to implement more safeguards, like the ability to easily mute people or rate your mate’s goodness.”

Thankfully, Resolution Games isn’t the only company working on novel implementations of privacy features. This makes the game more comfortable to play online in more hostile environments. Games Like Echo VR — Rest In Peace (opens in new tab) — Implement something like a personal space bubble to prevent players from physically approaching you and starting to poke you.
Platform makers like Meta take this issue (harassment) very seriously.
Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm
I also suggested implementing audio modulation natively in the game. This is how you can change your voice and make it sound like someone or another person. Palm says it’s difficult to do with current Quest hardware, but “AI and other tools are making it increasingly feasible.” That’s great news!
Palm also added, “Platform makers like Meta take this issue[harassment]very seriously, especially since they’ve already experienced it on their regular Facebook site.”
In other words, VR has its own set of challenges that it needs to deal with on its own, but human nature, if left unchecked, does the best (worst) thing in any situation.
Whether it’s things like Fortnite, VR Chat, or something in-between, it’s all about creating better, friendlier places for people to spend their free time and continuing to advance the future of human interaction. I think these efforts
