Mars-backed Bundle x Joy bags $1M to double its pet care footprint in retailers

The number of pet owners has steadily increased over the years, and over the past three years many have welcomed a pet into their family. That, in turn, has boosted the pet industry itself, with the market value increasing from $90 billion in 2018 to more than $120 billion in 2021.

Of that, $50 billion was spent on food and sweets in the United States. This leaves room for startups to offer the same subscription-box conveniences that people have had for food and other products. Companies such as Chewy and Barkbox are among the largest.

Many are sold directly to consumers, including pet care startup Bundle x Joy, but founder and CEO Jessica Berger told TechCrunch, “True DTC play is the kind of play that consumers don’t necessarily want to engage with. It’s not the way it’s done,’ he told TechCrunch.

“They are thrilled to be back in the store,” Berger said. “They are excited to touch, feel and discover new products. Our brands are so disruptive on the shelves that we believe retail is key to our discovery.” While using retail as the starting point of the funnel, DTC will be a much smaller part than expected.”

Berger launched Bundle x Joy in 2022 after spending the past 15 years in the pet industry. Specifically at PetSmart and Nestlé, he ran the Castor & Pollux organic dog and cat food line.

The company offers premium superfood nutrition and a selection of product bundles of dog supplements and treats for a $2 per day subscription fee. There is also a 3% giveback to fund.

A year later, Bundle x Joy is rolling out to more than 450 retailers at Sprouts, Whole Foods, and select specialty stores, and will expand to other major national retailers this summer, including another yet to be announced. Double the footprint. It can also sell directly to consumers through the company’s website and his Amazon.com.

The company has also raised $1 million in new seed funding, which closed this week. Leap Venture Studio led the round with participation from groups including Mars Petcare Companion Fund, R/GA Ventures, Michelson Found Animals Foundation and Cloyes Ventures.

“I’m a first-generation Latina, and we’re trying to bring more diversity into the space,” Berger said. “Many founders struggle to break into retail, but I tell them we bring a lot of innovation and new customers to your pet set. We will provide it.”

For example, the company turned to TikTok for a series of interviews with Sprouts customers. “We’ve been working with them and using their customer base and digital to drive it, and it’s been very successful,” Berger added.

From a nutrition standpoint, Bundle x Joy has curated a box of 15 products and a unique “Pup Quiz” for customers to rate the products they offer and their dog’s personality. In fact, the company assigns each pet a fun personality, such as “Golden,” “Vibrant,” and “Brave.”

Additionally, the quiz allows the company to output pet-friendly bundles based on the pet’s specific needs, including food and supplement formulations, size, and frequency.

“If your pet is ‘golden’, it will appear as #goldenaf through your experience on the website. So it’s a more enjoyable way to focus on the joy that comes with engaging with us rather than pet food chores. pet. I really thought that was missing,” Berger told TechCrunch.

Berger, meanwhile, began raising a seed round in October 2021 and just closed this week. Berger explained that Bundle x Joy was a finalist for the venture to enter her studio, so she knew investors would be on Berger’s terms if there was an open round in between. rice field.

Well, she didn’t participate in that particular cohort, but offered the flexibility opportunity to go out and raise money as needed for the entire million dollars at once. I recall talking to hundreds of investors over that year and a half. Many people liked the way she did it, but she was told to call when she was selling $1 million a month.

Instead, Berger followed the path of friends and family with his father as the first investor.

“I think he knew that if he invested in the first place, I would really have to fight to make it work,” she said. I didn’t try, but fast forward 5 months and I see that he’s coming to me.Also we’ve been very lucky.I’m in no debt. This is me. It’s really important for

In addition to expanding into new stores, Bundle x Joy plans to use the proceeds from the procurement to grow the team. Berger said the company has hired a full-time marketing director. This is a new focus for the company. We also increase inventory and product development.
