Spring may be reluctantly approaching in the northern hemisphere, but that doesn’t mean we’re done hearing about new forms of winter transportation. One of his latest offerings is the eLyly, a wooden electric snow scooter.
Created by Finnish inventor Pasi Kauppinen, the ride is named after the lyly, the long wooden skis used by the old Finns to glide over snow. For eLyly, wood is used for the body, handle mast and steerable front of his skis.
A 1,000-watt electric motor spins a snowmobile-like rear track, giving the scooter a top speed of 25 km/h (16 mph). The lithium battery, which he charges for 2.5 hours, is said to provide a range of 20-30 km (12-19 miles), depending on factors such as rider weight, snow conditions and ambient temperature.
Ely
The scale reportedly tips at 55 kg (121 lbs) and can manage rider weights up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Ready to use with the handlebars upright, eLyly measures 180 cm high, 120 cm long and 30 cm wide (70.9 x 47.2 x 11.8 inches). A built-in headlight helps riders see the trail at night, and a taillight ensures that other riders can see it.
