Android TV rolls out user profiles, but there’s a caveat

What you need to know

  • Google seems to have added a user account switcher to Android TV.
  • The account switcher icon will be visible to a limited number of users for the time being.
  • However, this feature does not switch accounts used by apps such as YouTube and the Play Store.

Since last year’s update introduced custom profiles, Google TV has become more useful for everyone in the house. Google appears to be adding similar functionality to its massive Android TV system.

As spotted by a Reddit user, a new update to the Android TV home screen experience has introduced a profile switcher icon in the top right corner of the interface. (opens in new tab) (via 9to5Google) (opens in new tab)). The icon does exactly what it says on the tin and lets you change the primary Google account on your smart TV. Google also uses the primary account for watchlists and purchases.

However, if you were expecting an experience similar to a typical streaming device running Google TV, you’ll be disappointed. In addition to switching the primary Google Account linked to your device, Google uses your primary account to[発見]Create and provide recommendations in tabs. But as it stands, that seems to be all there is to it.

This means that Google TV is completely unavailable. This will change the account used by YouTube, Google Play Store and other Google apps installed on your TV. There is also no option to add child accounts.
